Contrasting cats

I’ve always thought that a pub is enhanced by a pub cat, and it’s unfortunate that none of my regular haunts seem to have one.

I was amused the other day to come across here these two cartoons of pub cats (and no, I don’t know what the page is about either, or what relevance it has to pub cats):

Poncy Soft Southern Pub Cat in Native Habitat

Hard Northern Pub Cat in Native Habitat

Obviously this predates the smoking ban!

  1. That Northern pub cat's not hard - he's still got a tail!

Much prefer pub dogs - they're like having another friendly 'regular' about the place.

  2. I must respond - Northerners may be harder, and women in particular seem able to drink their pints quicker, but the stereotype about basic Northern/posh Southern pubs doesn't really hold. Outside of the commuter belt and the coast, many southern pubs would be more at home in Salford than Chorlton, and scratchings are just as common. Go to "Royal" Tunbridge Wells if you don't believe me !

  3. The descriptions aren't mine - they come from the original page where I found the drawings. I like cats and thought these were very appealing.

I'm certainly not one to go in for crude North/South stereotypes, and in fact North Cheshire is one of the wealthiest and "poshest" parts of the country outside London.

I went in the Rose & Crown in Tunbridge Wells a few years ago which struck me as a very pleasant, down-to-earth pub.

  4. Don't worry Curmudgeon - Southern indignation was entirely in jest ! By the way, I think it was the Rose Crown that came to mind to me too.
