I think The Lych Gate Tavern is my favourite Wolves pub but I agree that during the week it is very much a ghost town in a lot of these cities at present (i.e. Derby too)Britain Beermathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06096636784719969464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623537812609722663.post-23252963697967168862021-09-12T13:23:59.612+01:002021-09-12T13:23:59.612+01:00Hi Mudgie - I remember getting quite excited about...Hi Mudgie - I remember getting quite excited about the 'Darlington Tavern' until I realised it was a mock shopfront and not a pre-emptive tick for Martin, BRAPA and the like. The closure of Beatties is a major blow to Wolverhampton and the shell has been left in Closing Down mode for too many months already so hopefully the place will get a new lease of life very soon, even if its retail days are in the past.

I definitely agree regarding your Great Western observations; when I first went back in after the refurb it felt slightly stark even though many of the old railwayana items were still there. I'm sure the patina will come back before too long, and its still right up there among my West Midlands favourites. I'm not sure Wolverhampton is ever going to feature on my wish list, but there are some interesting looking pubs, and Holden's beers are always a bonus.Paul Baileyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09678639237696546268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623537812609722663.post-35930807492763698082021-09-11T21:24:20.310+01:002021-09-11T21:24:20.310+01:00In Durham TTL seems to be more popular now, lovely...In Durham TTL seems to be more popular now, lovely condition and cool temperature at the Shakespeare and Half Moon. Victoria Inn seems to be struggling - warm beer and commies in Che Guevara t-shirts given free reign. It does seem to have rather more new micros than Wolverhampton, though, and there are some classic Bass locals on the outskirts.

It has to be accepted that the glory days are never coming back for sub-regional shopping hubs, and the policy needs to be more one of managed decline and repurposing rather than trying to flog a dead horse.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623537812609722663.post-86151110196355665172021-09-11T11:36:11.077+01:002021-09-11T11:36:11.077+01:00A lot of points there on Wolves I agree with.
Whi...A lot of points there on Wolves I agree with.

While I see a lot of positive signs there's a post-Lockdown bounce-back, some places like Wolves had been on the slide for a while, a fact that the quality of the pubs tends to help us gloss over as pub tourists. Newcastle (Staffs) was desperately quiet the other week.

The Combermere had terrific beer (Greene King) when we visited Banks's 3 years ago, better than in the Clarendon.

I also thought the beer in the Great Western a little overrated, a comment someone else made on a blog this week. But it's a great pub. retiredmartinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15429804437739227082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623537812609722663.post-76407626770221768192021-09-10T18:37:24.496+01:002021-09-10T18:37:24.496+01:00I did mention it on the Beer & Pubs Forum the ...I did mention it on the Beer & Pubs Forum the previous day, but in general I don't plan these trips well in advance, it just happens that I get a gap in my schedule that coincides with some reasonable weather.Curmudgeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02558747878308766840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623537812609722663.post-67964928825980074912021-09-10T17:31:59.796+01:002021-09-10T17:31:59.796+01:00Interesting. It's a number of years since we did a crawl around Wolverhampton and I've not been in any of the pubs you went to (apart from the Great Western...but that's only because you told me about it!) The Combermere Arms and Clarendon are outside the ring road, so we wouldn't have found them by accident, but we've never been to the Lych Gate (didn't know it existed) nor the Wheatshef! (We've probably used the 'Spoons, but not 100% sure! Next time we're passing through, I'll endeavour to visit some of these establishments.

I didn't see your intention to visit Wolverhampton until after the event, otherwise I'd probably have joined you!PetesQuizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13620433090438752385noreply@blogger.com
