Staggering around Didsbury

There’s some more of my deathless prose in February’s issue of Opening Times, in the write-up of the pub crawl of Didsbury that took place in November – scroll down to Page 7. It has to be said that, if your experience of pubs was confined to Friday nights in Didsbury, you would probably reach the conclusion that the pub trade remained in rude health, so it is very untypical of the whole.

    Thanks for the article.

    I visted a few on a Sunday lunchtime last month and thought beer quality was very good, and probably better than the more favoured bars up the road in Chorlton. Beer turnover looked high, particularly in the Royal Oak.

    In contrast with the letter further on, I thought the beer in the Milson Rhodes was exceptional. I think there are as many people who will mark down 'Spoons on principle as will reward it for unusual beers and vouchers.

    The letter was very wide of the mark as it is clear that the local CAMRA branch do not just include Spoons "on the nod". Indeed, when it comes to the voting phase of GBG selection, it's often the case that Spoons pubs are less well supported than their beer scores might suggest.

    I don't suppose the Royal Oak in Didsbury still does the gargantuan cheese lunches?

    Paul - The Royal Oak was still doing the famous lunches, but only weekdays I think.

    The Royal Oak has only ever done cheese lunches on weekdays - a bit of a throwback to a past era of pubs, really.
