Well, you didn’t seem to be very enthusiastic about the prospects for success of the two-thirds pint “schooner” measure. I asked the question “Will two-third pint "schooner" measures take off?” and you answered:
Yes: 10 (23%)
No: 33 (77%)
However, it’s important to remember that, even if it doesn’t appeal to you personally, it may well do to others, and far from being the bureaucratic imposition that some have claimed, it is in fact a measure of liberalisation. Personally, I wish it bon voyage.
i see that my local charity shop has 3 dozen boxed schooners. Should i buy these up before they rocket in price? :)
ReplyDeleteI voted 'no', not because I'm hostile to the idea; I simply doubt there will be significant demand for it. But who knows? While one third pint glasses are still uncommon, their use is increasing, so perhaps the same will happen with the 2/3rds, particularly in pubs with a large range of cask beers.
ReplyDeleteI voted no too, as although I'm very much in favour of it I can see it falling victim to traditional British conservatism. But who knows, it could take off, and we won't know until we've tried it.
ReplyDeleteThere was a particularly daft article on the subject in today's Sunday Telegraph which perpetuates all the myths that it:
1. will replace the pint
2. is a bureaucratic imposition rather than a measure of liberalisation
3. paves the way for wholesale deregulation of pub measures, and
4. somehow represents creeping metrication
The Telegraph isn't quite as insane as the Mail or the Express, but it's not not averse to manufacturing conspiracy theories.
ReplyDeleteI voted no as the glass, whilst smaller than a pint, is still heavier than air and thus when dropped will fall to the ground rather than rise into the air.

ReplyDeleteStill, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating, but human nature being what it is, there will be some who will wish to exploit this new "freedom" to their own advantage. And many that will let them.
