Ye Olde Smoking Shelter
For a change, here are a couple of photos of a pub that is actually open, Robinson’s recently refurbished Tatton Arms at Moss Nook near Manchester Airport. In general, they’ve done a pretty good job of it, although as always a little of the former character has to be sacrificed to the demands of the modern world. However, the feature that really stands out is the elaborate, timber-framed smoking shelter tacked on to the south end of the pub, shown on the first picture.

Does the smoking shelter have the infra red lights (or gas patio heater - much friendlier) and a side window to the bar so that you can be served without traipsing back inside?
ReplyDeleteIf so, then top smoking shelter!
Is it glazed on all sides? If so, looks 'substantially enclosed' to me...
ReplyDeleteIt looks pleasant. It is therefore certainly not a legal smoking area!
ReplyDeleteIf you look carefully there's a large gap in the side facing you, so it certainly complies with the (ludicrous) regulation that it can only be 50% enclosed. Without changing any other aspect of the smoking ban, the current government in their campaign against red tape could make a substantial difference by changing that to 75%.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, why not a 100% enclosed area away from the pub? 50% was chosen by the previous government to make the environment as unpleasant as possible for us smokers. And frankly I don't see this government treating us with any less contempt than their predecessors did.
ReplyDeletePicking up on Anon's comment, "Indeed, why not a 100% enclosed area away from the pub?", how about 100% enclosed and open to access by non-smokers and bar staff, maybe even have a few beer taps in the corner to save people the shag of going elsewhere to fill glasses?
ReplyDeleteTo brighten things up, they could play music, have the heating on in winter, it would be great!
Mark, I like your way of thinking. It is flawed though because the bar staff would surely die somewhere between entering such an area and returning to the bar with the glasses.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if the pub had a friendly next door neighbour, couldn't they offer to hold the smokers 100% enclosed area on their property? Maybe the publican paying a (discreet) peppercorn rent.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed a 100% enclosed smoking area quite a distance from the pub with its own drink supply and reduced prices -- Unfortunately unlicensed premises will become the 'new' pub.
ReplyDeleteJust look at history!
One of the best smoking area's I've seen, well done that pub. Unfortunately most have nothing or perhaps a collapsed umbrella.
ReplyDeleteHave visited the refurbished Tatton. Refurbishment excellent, a good combination of old and new. The menu, however, is very limited and the actual food uninspiring - needs rethinking.
ReplyDeleteI didn't actually look at the menus as they had only been put out in the lower part of the pub - another lesson to learn, maybe.
ReplyDeleteAnd "limited, uninspiring" food in a pub - no surprise there, then.
The tatton has been my local for 30 odd years, the landlady[Karen]has gone to an incredible amount of trouble and effort to make The tatton a very friendly and pleasant pub including a great menu.On friday night`s there is usually a good quality act the staff also are very attentive and friendly,You won`t be dissappointed
