Four legs good?

Following on from my post about British beer innovation and enthusiasm increasingly passing CAMRA by, I thought I would ask readers what they thought of bottled BrewDog Punk IPA – a brewery-conditioned beer and thus not officially CAMRA approved. There were 53 responses, broken down as follows:

An excellent beer: 35 (66%)
Not to my taste: 13 (25%)
Chemical fizz: 5 (9%)

So almost two thirds thought it was “an excellent beer”, while a mere 9% followed the “Dickie English” purist line that it was unworthy of any consideration. Make of that what you will...

  1. I think it accurately represents the readership of your blog, and no more ~ but there's nothing wrong with that. I have never tasted that particular beer and so am unable to judge.

  2. I suppose there might have been a few people who thought it excellent but not to their taste. For instance, I don't like the taste of Hallertau hops but I'm perfectly prepared to accept that there are excellent beers brewed with them.

  3. Never tried it, but would like to and be able to and form my own opinion. Camra sound very NULab-ish these days...

  4. For those who haven't tried it, it's an excellent beer, but it takes no prisoners...

Most main Tesco stores seem to sell it.

  5. For me, it's more about which of their beers you pick. I believe BrewDog recently tweaked the recipe of Punk - the colour and hopping in the last one I tried seemed different.

If you'd used Zeitgeist as an example, I'd have said it's excellent.

  6. Its obvious why Camra does'nt
    approve the brewdog ale.
They dont allow morris dancing or
rug wearing in the brewery social club.

Ps I'lle pop into Tescos for a
crate of the brew in question.
Bound to be a bit of all right if
    HopSoviet disapprove.

  7. Punk IPA has improved and I'll happily drink it but I wouldn't say it's excellent. Goose Island IPA on the other hand certainly is excellent and isn't bottle conditioned either.

  8. Tastes even better with a good smoke.

  9. Was Dickie English aware of your poll? Also was he aware of how many of the "ignorami" obviously voted on it?

  10. A question that needs asking, surely, is whether Punk IPA would be improved by bottle-conditioning?

  11. And would it sell more, or less, if it was bottle-conditioned?

  12. I don't know. I thought the point was the excellence of the beer.

  13. I appreciate this is a more light hearted post, but have just come across this. Fill in the missing word.

"The global strategy to reduce the harmful use of X was adopted by consensus at the annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO).

"X contributes to accidents, mental health problems, social problems and harms third parties," said Bernt Bull, a senior advisor in Norway's health ministry. Nordic countries spearheaded the initiative at the United Nations agency.

A relatively high excise tax on X and regulations limiting their availability was helping to reduce X related diseases in Norway, he said.

The WHO estimates that risks linked to X cause 2.5 million deaths a year from heart and liver disease, road accidents, suicides and various cancers -- 3.8 percent of all deaths. It is the third leading risk factor for premature deaths and disabilities worldwide.

"The harmful use of X has a serious effect on public health and is considered to be one of the main risk factors for poor health globally," the WHO strategy document says."

The buzz words include harm to others, think of the children, major cause, social problems, poor health and junk science.

Not tobacco, alcohol. Expect an unrelenting tide of denormalisation and demonisation more or less exactly as smokers have to put up with.
